A small-room purifier that treats odour as seriously as it treats dust. The number that matters on a page about smoke is its clean air delivery rate for smoke: 143 CFM, independently verified under AHAM rather than stated by the manufacturer.

We run one. It does reduce the smell in the room. It does not make it vanish, and we would not expect any purifier to.

Why the carbon stage is the one to care about
A HEPA stage captures particles. Smell is not a particle problem — it is largely volatile compounds, and those pass straight through a particle filter. The activated carbon stage is what adsorbs them, and it is the reason this unit is on the list rather than a cheaper purifier with a better particle rating and no carbon to speak of.
On the filter rating, stated precisely
Levoit rates the original filter as HEPA-grade while operating in Sleep Mode, tested against IEST RP C001.7. Older marketing for this line used stronger language and you will still find it repeated widely. We quote the manufacturer's current wording, because the listing you are buying from is what governs.
This is a filtration-only device — a three-stage cartridge, no ioniser stage.
Choosing the replacement cartridge
More than one replacement exists, and the standard one is not the best choice if odour is your problem. Levoit sells a Toxin Absorber cartridge aimed at smoke and VOCs, and a Pet Allergy cartridge for dander. Most people replace like-for-like with whatever shipped in the box and never learn there was a better-matched option.
Replace it, never wash it
The cartridge is replace-only — never washed or vacuumed. HEPA media depends on a fibre structure that water and suction both wreck, and a damaged filter looks and fits exactly like a good one.
