Every filter in this category fails the same way: silently, and long before anyone replaces it. A carbon filter that has stopped working looks exactly like a new one. There is no colour change, no warning, no smell of its own — the only symptom is the smell it was supposed to be stopping, and by then it has been failing for weeks.

The room purifier: pick the right replacement, and never wash it
Two mistakes cost the most
Do not wash or vacuum the cartridge. The Core 300's three stages — pre-filter, H13 True HEPA, and activated carbon — are one unit. HEPA media works by an arrangement of fibres that water and suction both destroy; a washed filter looks fine, fits fine, and filters considerably worse than it did. Nothing about it will tell you. It is a replace-only part.
For smoke, the standard filter is not the right one. The Core 300 takes more than one replacement cartridge, and the listing names them: a standard filter, a Toxin Absorber filter specialised for smoke and VOCs, and a Pet Allergy filter. If odour rather than dust is the reason the purifier is in the room, the Toxin Absorber is the one to order. Most people replace like-for-like with whatever came in the box and never find out there was a better option for their actual problem.
What the unit is rated to do
The Core 300 is specified at 5 air changes per hour in a room up to 219 ft² / 20 m², clearing it in about 12 minutes, at 24 dB on sleep mode. It is ozone-free and uses no UV-C, which matters here: UV-C purifiers can generate ozone as a by-product, and adding ozone to a room you are trying to make pleasant is a poor trade.
The useful way to read that rating is as a ceiling, not a promise. It assumes a sealed room of that size and a clean filter. A larger space, an open door, or a saturated cartridge all reduce it, and the rating never changes to tell you so.
The personal filter: finite, and not refillable
A Smokebuddy is a sealed carbon cartridge you exhale through. There is no servicing it and no refilling it — when the carbon is spent the unit is spent. It is listed at an estimated 300 uses or more, which is a genuine estimate rather than a guarantee: how long it lasts depends on how much you push through it each time.
Two real signals, and they arrive in this order:
- Resistance increases. It gets measurably harder to blow through. This is the early warning and it is the one to act on.
- Smell starts passing. This is the late signal. By the time you notice it, it has been partially failing for a while.
It is a consumable. Treat the second one as a spare rather than an upgrade, and note that it does nothing at all for a room — it only filters what you deliberately breathe into it. For ambient odour you want the purifier; these two sit alongside each other rather than instead of one another.
Grow tent carbon: the mistake is running the fan too fast
This is the least intuitive one and the place most setups lose performance without anyone realising.
Carbon needs contact time. Odour molecules are adsorbed onto the carbon surface as air passes through, and that takes a moment. Push air through faster and less of it gets captured — so a fan running flat out through a carbon filter can remove less odour than the same fan at half speed, while being louder and wearing the filter no better.
Work out what you actually need. The 4x4 kit lists a 48 × 48 × 80 inch tent, which is about 107 cubic feet. The usual target is to exchange the tent's air roughly once a minute, so about 107 CFM does the job. The kit's inline fan is rated at 440 CFM — roughly four times the requirement.
That is not a fault in the kit; headroom is genuinely useful, because filters restrict airflow as they load and ducting bends cost you more. But it does mean the fan is meant to be run well below maximum. Turn it down until odour control is good and noise is tolerable, and you will get better filtration, a quieter room, and a filter that is not being hammered.
Two more things that shorten a carbon filter's life more than time does: high humidity, which loads the carbon with water instead of odour, and running without a pre-filter, which packs the carbon with dust. Why intervals rather than inspection
Particle filters tell you something — a pre-filter greys, airflow drops. Carbon tells you nothing. Activated carbon works by adsorption onto an enormous internal surface area, and when that surface is occupied the filter simply stops capturing, with no change in appearance, weight you would notice, or sound.
There is also a failure mode worth knowing about: a saturated carbon filter in warm, moving air can release some of what it previously captured. So the state past "not working" is not neutral. This is why every serious application replaces carbon on a schedule and does not wait for a symptom.
The practical version: write the install date on the filter in marker when you fit it. It takes five seconds and it is the only record that will exist.
What we don't carry
We don't currently list replacement cartridges for any of these — not the Core 300 filters, not inline carbon filters. That is a real gap rather than an oversight, and it is the same gap as humidity packs: the catalog carries the hardware and not the consumables the hardware needs. Both are on the shortlist, and this page gets updated when they arrive.
Until then, the specific thing to search for matters: order the Core 300 cartridge by the variant that suits your problem rather than whichever comes up first, and match an inline filter to your duct diameter and fan rating rather than to the tent size.
How we choose
Two filters. First, does the product do a job the cheap version does badly — capture, airflow, durability. Second, does the Amazon listing point at one specific item likely to still exist in a year, because a recommendation that dead-ends is worse than no recommendation. Specifications on this page are quoted from the product listings we link to, not measured by us; the airflow arithmetic is worked from the dimensions those listings state.
