Two products in this catalog look like they do the same job. One holds 18 pounds in total. The other holds 500. Nobody checks, because shelf load is buried in the spec list while the photographs both show plants sitting happily on shelves.

This is a load and footprint reference for grow space. It is the number that decides whether a structure is useful to you, and it is almost never the number people shop on. What 1.5 lb per shelf actually means

This is the part worth reading twice, because it is the difference between a structure that works and one that sags the week you fill it.

A soft-sided walk-in greenhouse carries its shelves on thin tubular uprights through plastic clips. The 18 lb figure is the manufacturer's stated capacity for the whole unit. Spread across twelve shelves, that is about a pound and a half each. For scale, using rough working weights:

So a soft-sided walk-in is a propagation and overwintering structure: seedlings, cuttings, small pots, and things you are protecting from frost. It is not somewhere to stand mature plants on shelves, and one wet grow bag exceeds its whole rated capacity. Mature plants go on the ground inside it, not on the tiers.

The Regiller rack is the opposite trade. Steel tube construction, about 100 lb per shelf, and it fits a footprint of roughly a foot and a half square — so it goes in a closet, a corner or a garage. It has no cover and no environment, which is precisely why it carries weight.

Footprint is not growing space

Two structures with similar ground area behave completely differently.

A tent gives you all of its floor. A 4×4 is 16 usable square feet, a 4×8 is 32, and the height is where the light and extraction hang. Nothing is lost to walkways because you work from outside through the door.

A walk-in greenhouse spends its floor on you. The Ohuhu's ~21.7 sq ft footprint includes the aisle you stand in; the actual plant area is the twelve shelves either side. That is a good trade if you want to be inside it in poor weather, and a bad one if you only wanted square footage.

A rigid greenhouse gives you ground you have to furnish. Neither the Palram nor the Rion ships with benching, so factor that in — and note that a wire rack of the Regiller type is a perfectly good greenhouse bench, which is the cheapest way to fit one out.

Permanent or seasonal — pick this first

It decides everything else, and it is the honest dividing line across the catalog.

  • Permanent: the Palram Oasis Hex and the Rion EcoGrow 2. Rigid polycarbonate on structural frames, built to stay up through weather. The Palram is rated to 55 MPH wind and heavy snow, blocks 100% UV while passing over 90% of light, and carries an adjustable louvre and a gutter system. The Rion runs 4 mm twin-wall roof panels and 6 mm twin-wall walls on a UV-protected resin frame, with a hinged door, a roof vent and a barn profile for headroom. Both need a prepared, level base.
  • Seasonal: the Ohuhu walk-in. A PE cover on rust-resistant tube, assembled without tools, fully detachable, with a zippered roll-up door and two screened windows. It goes up in an afternoon and comes down at the end of the season.
  • Indoor and year-round: the 4×4 and 4×8 tents. Light-proof rather than light-gathering, which is the fundamental difference — a greenhouse lets sun in, a tent keeps everything out and gives you full control instead.

A greenhouse and a tent are not competing products, and choosing between them on price is the wrong axis. One uses the sun and follows the seasons; the other ignores both and costs electricity.

Matching the structure to the job

Two things that are not on any spec sheet

Static load is not the same as loaded-and-bumped. A 500 lb static rating assumes weight placed evenly and left alone. Uneven loading, a knock, or leaning on a shelf all consume that margin. Treat published loads as a ceiling you stay well under, not a target.

Anchoring is the failure mode for anything light. A PE-cover greenhouse is a sail. The stated capacity assumes the structure is still standing, and the most common way these fail is not a collapsed shelf but the whole unit moving in wind. Anchor it, weight the base, and site it out of the prevailing wind.

How we choose

Two filters. First, does the product do a job the cheap version does badly — load, weather resistance, ventilation, durability. Second, does the Amazon listing point at one specific item likely to still exist in a year, because a recommendation that dead-ends is worse than no recommendation. Specifications on this page are quoted from the product listings we link to, not measured by us; footprints, per-shelf loads and areas are arithmetic on those stated figures, and the item weights used for scale are approximate working figures rather than measurements.
